Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)

We are qualified MBTI practitioners at Pelorus Learning.  What is the MBTI then and why do we like to use it in our work?

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a self report questionnaire designed to make Jung’s theory of psychological types understandable and useful in everyday life.  MBTI results identify valuable differences between normal, healthy people, differences that can be the source of much misunderstanding and miscommunication.  After more than 50 years of research and development, the current MBTI is the most widely used instrument worldwide for understanding normal personality differences.

Taking the MBTI inventory enhances understanding of yourself, your motivations, your natural preferences and your potential areas for growth.  It will also help you appreciate people who differ from you.

Self Awareness & the MBTI

Every good leader shares a common trait – they are self aware.  That means they know what they are good at, their strengths, and they know what they are not so good at, their weaknesses.  They know what causes them stress, who pushes their buttons, what they hate doing and what they like doing – and why.  They know what gives them energy, and what drains them.  They know what they love to do, what they hate to do.  They know what they stand for, their values and the things they will never compromise.  They know what is important to them.

Why does all this matter?  If you don’t know yourself, then you have little hope of being the best team member, manager and leader you want to be.   If you don’t know what energises you and motivates you, you may well find yourself in a role or position that saps you rather than feeds you.

We have found and that the MBTI can be particuarly useful in helping teams where:

  • They need to be better acquainted with each other, the team leadership, and the team culture
  • A new team is forming or an existing team needs to revitalise
  • Individuals need to becoming more aware of their preferences for taking in information and making decisions
  • An improvement in communication and discovering individual and team problem-solving styles is required
  • An analysis of the team’s strengths, blind spots, and areas for improvement is needed
  • The Management of change, conflict, and stress are required
  • Discovering and practicing better ways of working together is deemed important
  • Unifying the team around a common purpose, understanding, and vision for the future is necessary
  • Developing action plans for individual and team growth is helpful and desired

The MBTI is a versatile tool and can be used in isolation or as part of an overall team building agenda.  Contact us if you would like to learn how the MBTI could be used in your team building.  We will be happy to design a proposed team building agenda for you free of charge.
